Halloween 2017

Halloween was pretty low key compared to years past and it was amazing.  When Halloween is on a school night it's hard to party too hard.  We carved pumpkins a day or two before and then went trick of treating with friends in a local picturesque neighborhood in Covington. The first house we visited belonged to Logan's Kindergarten teacher which was a fun surprise!

It was another year of non matching costumes inspired by the boys' current favorite things.  Micah dressed up as Jamie from Mythbusters and looked amazing even if he did get confused with a french painter from time to time.  Connor, after all of us had just watched the Hobbit (trilogy) chose Legolas.  It was perfect!  Logan chose to be Johnny, a gorilla from the movie Sing!.  A friend custom made his shirt and I got a Johnny mask from Etsy.  It was a unique choice and he quickly became super popular with our friend's son who is OBSESSED with that movie and Johnny.  He called Logan Johnny all night and it was the cutest!

Zach and I dressed as Fred and Daphne from Scooby Doo.  A friend gave me her costumes from the previous year and they were a huge hit!  The funniest part was that Zach had NO CLUE who we were.  His frenchiness strikes again!

jack o lanterns

Backtracking really quickly to pre Halloween with our jackolanterns.  Instead of drawing their own faces to use as a guide, this year we looked online for real templates and carved designs instead of pumpkin faces.

Connor wanted a Cheetah and there were no cheetah face templates so we made our own.  It turned out to be my favorite!  Logan had a fun Frankenstein face because of Alvin and the Chipmunks meet Frankenstein and Micah, ever the sports enthusiast, picked a Falcon symbol.  Micah even did the WHOLE thing by himself.

They lasted for about a day before they started getting yucky thanks to the on and off rain and hot temperatures the week of Halloween but they glowed well for a night and we had a fun time.

halloweening in oxford

This is by far the worst group of pictures I've ever had for Halloween.   We failed completely for the first time ever in getting a picture of the boys or our whole family all dressed up.  However, it was one of the most fun ones we've ever had so I guess it evens out.  Just for prosperity's sake, Logan was Anakin Skywalker, Connor was Lloyo (from Ninjago) and Micah was Calvin (and Hobbes).  I got the brilliant idea that Zach and I could be scarecrows after I saw my niece all dolled up as one but at the last minute Zach decided he didn't want to the make up on so he was just the farmer.

Since it's our first Halloween in Oxford we wanted to check out the trick or treating scene here.  One of our neighbors who has three boys exactly our boys ages hatched a plan involving a hayride around the neighborhood carrying our cute little trick or treaters and then a Great Pumpkin movie screening with popcorn and apple cider at his place.  Zach volunteered to rustle up a hayride, all we asked is that we could invite friends :)

We had some of our best buds come over for the traditional chili and mummy dog meal and then we all headed out.  As far as candy goes, there were actually not a ton of houses participating.  The majority of people have lived here for practically forever which means they are much much older and don't have any kids at home any longer.  However, we, parents and kiddos, had a fun time riding, walking, chatting and snacking and this mama wasn't too disappointed that their bags weren't overflowing and not one of the kids seemed to be disappointed which is always a win in my book.

It was a great ending to October and a lovely welcome into November!  Bring on the turkey :)

mismatched halloween

We had such a fun Halloween evening with the Cardozas!  Pretty much forever we've eaten dinner and gone trick or treating with them sometimes with others mixed in and sometimes alone.  Either way it's always a fun night!

For the first time ever the May family did not match.  I suggested so many different options but they all got vetoed. I may have teared up a bit before but I got over it.  At first Micah wanted to be a power ranger, Connor wanted to be a Cheetah and Logan wanted to be Jake (from Jake and the Neverland Pirates).  After seeing Micah's power ranger costume Connor changed his mind to power ranger also.  Super MegaForce Power Rangers to be specific.  Who cares that neither child has ever actually watched a whole episode of power rangers.  Apparently as a boy you are ingrained with the knowledge of all things super hero.  I dunno.

Logan's Jake costume never made it to the house after being ordered on ebay and instead of an emergency shopping trip he decided he wanted a shield, helmet and sword so we shopped in our own extensive dress up collection and he made a fierce but adorable knight.  Because I had already planned on being Izzy to match Logan, Zach took over the Jake position and we made a pretty cute couple.  I always thought they was something going on between those two on the show!

The Cardozas for the first time ever DID match.  They looked awesome as Anna, Elsa, Cristof and Olaf!  Such a cute Frozen family!

This was the first year Logan was able to really get into the trick or treating thing and he loved it.  He loved it until we ran into anything remotely scary and then he took off running in the opposite direction or burst into tears.  There's one 'creepy' house in the neighborhood and he was not a fan.  However there were plenty of 'nice' houses as he said and they all even scored extra candy at one house by saying War Eagle!  We had a such a great time.
